Now, its almost blasphemy to say anything negative about
Facebook now-a-days, however, there are a number of areas that many who are technology savvy still find annoying about the website/service/etc. And, believe-it-or-not, security is not even mentioned in this post. Those issues have been beaten like a dead cat and don’t need to be re-addressed. Over the past several years, Facebook has grown to more than 500,000,000 users, so you really can’t ignore the site either personally or if you are into online business at all. It does make you wonder, at what point will Facebook make so many changes that they alienate a significant portion of their user base as Digg has done previously and drive us to the next best thing online…
Top 5 Things That Stink About Facebook
#1 The Desire to Re-invent the Interface Every Two Months
Really Mark Zuckerburg, do you have to redesign the site like every two months? Every time the site undergoes a re-design, I get asked my my Mom, sister, in-laws, pick random friends, about is it safe to do so? Where do I find out how to “pick a task here” etc. Please keep the design static for at least nine months at a time! Please!!
#2 Photo/Image Viewing
In the latest re-design the photo viewing went from OK to crappy. The pictures are now displayed in a smaller format and just don’t give the same experience as before to the user. This feature was not broken and should revert to the what we had before.
#3 New Messaging and Email System
I messed up here big time on my Facebook account. I said “yes” to the new messaging/email system. I’m sure the Facebook email will be the only one my son and daughters use for the rest of their life, but I didn’t really need a 10
th email address. A better option would have been to keep the old messaging system and make email an extra to use. Then phase out messaging over the next year. I’m just annoyed at this one. And, you make me invite others to use it too on Facebook?
#4 Facebook Pages Tabs
Getting rid of customized tabs is very “Microsoft-like” of Facebook. They are still there “sorta”… just not as prominent as before. This was the closest thing to “MySpace Customization” we had as a consumer-base on Facebook which has been significantly marginalized. The businessman in me will now avoid investing any money in Facebook customization since it can be made obsolete overnight by Mark Z “For the Good of the Community.”
#5 FB Like Re-Design
The marketer in me likes the fact that the full page link and description is included on everyone’s personal page who likes one of my pages or sites. I dislike the redesign as an individual, because, I know clutter my personal news feed for others and tend to like less things now to avoid pissing friends off.
