How to backup your Gmail account for free

Lately with all these lost Gmail accounts I started to think what should I do to keep safe my emails. The solution I have in mind is simple and free but I can bet there are other paid ones if you really think seriously to back-up your Gmail account.

What I’m going to do is to download on my computer all my Gmail emails using a piece of free software like http://www.gmail-backup.com/download, or maybe other but the whole idea is to create a local backup of the emails I already have in my inbox. But this is crazy! “You are currently using 4945 MB (65%) of your 7567 MB” – the backup will take forever! Well, isn’t worth to be safe? :)
Next step is to create a new Gmail account and restore all emails (backed up in the previous step) from my hard drive to the new email account.
After that I will just setup my Gmail to forward a copy, using the POP/IMAP feature, of all incoming emails I receive to the backup Gmail account so basically I will have all incoming emails in to places, 2 different Gmail accounts.
This is what I’m thinking but please let me know if you know a better way around. Meanwhile let’s cross fingers and hope that the Google guys won’t make lost any other email account :)
