Many of AT&T customers, who are using iPhone, recently received a message from AT&T asking them to update their device to the latest build iOS 4.2. This kind of message from the AT&T clearly means that the company is just trapping the iPhone users who are using jail broken or unlocked iPhone. Certainly this update will make them to lose the unlocks and jailbreak too so the device will be carrier-locked after you install this update.
iPhone Dev Team’s Spokesman put a screen shot of the text message sent by AT&T and said that the iPhone users especially those with jailbreak and unlock, must not update to iOS 4.2. As for the time being, there is no untethered jailbreak available for the iOS 4.2 so if you update you will have to rely on non- untethered jailbreak.

"AT&T Free MSG: An important software update is available for your iPhone. To update to iOS 4.2, connect to i Tunes and follow the instructions."
We recommend you once again not to update otherwise you will have to lose jailbreak and unlocks.
