Today Sky officially switched on its new 3D channel, which offers a range of programmes in three dimensions, although mostly sports and movies to begin with.
To watch the new channel, you need to be a Sky World subscriber, although the good news is it’s free of charge otherwise. Of course, you’ll also need a 3DTV set and the requisite glasses (both passive and active work fine with the service).
The first event to be covered was the Ryder Cup which began today, but the tournament was rained off, which was rather an anti-climax. Well, even more of an anti-climax than golf normally is, we should say… (just kidding, nine iron fans).
A Which report also raised the issue that rain drops on the two lenses needed to film 3D content looked worse than on a normal camera lens. It makes you wonder what other problems will rear their heads that we haven’t anticipated with 3D viewing.
Still, you can’t go wrong with the movies, and the three dimensional films which will be out on Sky 3D on the run up to Christmas include Alice in Wonderland, Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs, Coraline, Fly Me To The Moon, Harry Potter & The Half Blood Prince and My Bloody Valentine.
Virgin Media launched its own on-demand 3D film service earlier this week, although Sky is unlikely to be too concerned about this, given that it only offers the one movie at the moment: Street Dance 3D, a showcase of British street dancing talent. Don’t all rush at once now.
